Early History of the Southington Apple Harvest Festival

Back in the 1960s, Southington residents declared themselves the state's leading supplier of apples, with acres of apple trees dotting the landscape. Several major orchards called Southington home, and they wanted to celebrate their healthy harvests.

With that in mind, the town organized its first apple harvest festival in 1969. The plan was to offer a parade and have area businesses set up tents and booths with products for sale and activities for the kids. That first parade featured 130 floats and other units and lasted about 90 minutes.

Additionally, volunteers from many local organizations took charge of the event's booths and tents. For instance, several local PTAs had craft booths for kids. Organizers estimated that some 20,000 attended that first year, which was excellent for a town of only 29,000!

The following year, 1970, the festival experienced tremendous growth, with over 600 volunteers signing up to help. That year, onsite booths expanded from local apple businesses to handmade artwork, jewelry, and other items for sale. Of course, there was also lots of food for everyone to enjoy!

Since those early years, the history of the apple harvest festival has continued to grow. The parade often includes celebrities from near and far. Even actor Mike Connors, from the 1980s TV series Mannix, once made an appearance.

Today, the festival includes fireworks, famed apple fritter booths, and much more. The festival has grown so much that coordinators begin planning the next year's event as soon as the current festival ends! In 2023, the festival should run from September 29 through October 8 and offer great attractions for everyone. To find out more, be sure to bookmark their official website:
